Ray Tracing Based Computer Games, Saarbruecken
RTGames - Computer Games Based on Ray Tracing
Recently, realtime ray tracing has been developed to the point where
it is becoming a possible alternative to the current rasterization
approach for interactive 3D graphics. With the availability of a
first prototype graphics board purely based on ray tracing, we have
all the ingredients for a new generation of 3D graphics technology
that could have significant consequences for computer gaming.
However, hardly any research has been looking at how games could
benefit from ray tracing based graphics.
The RTGames working group tries to fill this gap with the development
of computer games based on ray tracing. With these academic studies,
we evaluate the process of adapting existing rasterization based games
(partly using original game content) to ray tracing. Additionally we
evaluate new ways how computer games could look like if they where
directly developed to use ray tracing.
The games where developed using OpenRT, an API similar to OpenGL,
which transparently hides the actual implementation of the ray tracer.
Like the MESA-System for OpenGL, OpenRT includes a highly optimized
software ray tracer, which runs on a single CPU as well as on a
cluster of PC (with linear speed-up per CPU). Alternatively to the
software ray tracer, with SaarCOR
a first prototype of a graphics board purely based on ray tracing is
available.
